The burned body of a woman was found inside a unit in this apartment complex on Detroit’s west side. It’s the third similar case in the city in the past nine days.
Detroit police found a dead woman’s burned body on the city’s west side — for the third time since July 26.
Authorities are investigating whether a serial attacker is responsible for setting each Michigan woman ablaze and leaving her for dead.
The most recent body was found inside an apartment after firefighters extinguished the flames Saturday morning.
“It’s a young lady, I think, I’m not sure. All I could see was the leg and it looked like the leg of a lady than more of a man. So, I’m not sure yet,” Fire Chief Jack Wiley told CBS-affiliate WWJ-TV.
But one of the victim’s neighbors, identified only as Felicia, knew the body was a woman’s — a woman whose kids played with hers in their common apartment complex.
“We knew the girl, not personally but, you know, our kids play with her kids. It’s just sad,” she told the local station.
“I fear for my safety, I fear for everybody’s safety. It’s just sad. I don’t know what is going on. It’s like people don’t value life anymore.”
Now police are investigating whether this death is connected to the others.
On July 26, police found a 37-year-old woman after she was physically assaulted and burned. She had been in critical condition but is now in stable condition.
The following day, another woman in her 20s or 30s was physically and likely sexually abused. Police found her unconscious and rushed her to the hospital. She was in critical condition at the time; her current condition is unknown.
